I knew it. I knew something was wrong.

Sunk down behind the wheel of her car in the parking lot, Mia watched the U.S. Marshal, a built, older man with a tough-as-nails sneer, holster his gun and head toward the parking lot opposite hers. He had a strut to him, an attitude, and she could tell by the way he’d pulled that gun on that poor mother that he wouldn’t show any mercy to her, if he got her in the same situation.

She knew the Marshals would be after her. It was only a matter of time. She was an FBI agent, on the run, and the longer she evaded detection, the more they’d double down. They wouldn’t simply forget that she was out there. She’d always figured the Feds would send one of their own to hunt her down, eventually.

But she hadn’t known for sure that someone was after her until just now.

Now, she could put a face with the threat. A good thing, but then again . . . very bad.

He’d gotten close, this time. Too close.

If she’d obeyed her instincts and gone out to hug them, she’d be in the back of the Marshal’s car right now, headed back to prison.

All the more reason to keep her head about her.

She shouldn’t even be here. Watching them, even from a distance, was a risk.

She shook her head. David was right. She was being reckless, and she needed to stop.

She watched as the Marshal got into his car, then shifted her gaze toward Aiden and Kelsey. They were just a row away, a few cars over. So close. He’d sat Kelsey down on the bumper of their SUV and was leaning into her, smoothing her hair and whispering some comforting words. She couldn’t hear, but she knew the gist: Don’t worry. Everything’s all right.

Kelsey was always full of questions. She was probably asking why that man was after her. What she’d done. Why he was so scary and tough-looking. Whether he would hurt her if he caught her.

Mia could just imagine her husband’s response: It’s going to be fine. Your mother is tough, too. She can take care of herself.

Kelsey shook her head and cried something in reply. Mia could imagine that, too: Billy Sheridan says mom is an escaped convict and is going to fry when they catch her.

Billy Sheridan, their next-door neighbor, was fond of feeding Kelsey the worst possible information to make her young imagination run wild.

But in this case, it wasn’t exactly false.

Mia didn’t know what would happen to her, if she was caught. In Texas, the Death Penalty was on the table, though rare. Maybe she wouldn’t be fried, but she would be put away for a long, long time. Forget ever having a normal life with Kelsey, ever again.

At the SUV, Aiden scooped Kelsey into a hug and then helped her back into the car. She desperately wished she could climb into that car with them. That she could fall asleep in the passenger side, like she did, so many times, and not have a care in the world.
